MCubed/Mehlli Gobhai Illustrator’s Award
“What is the use of a book without pictures…?” Alice wonders in Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland. We agree and so the MCubed Library is happy to announce the Second Mehlli Gobhai Award for the Best Work in Children's Book Illustration.
We are delighted to be honouring those illustrators who have provided alternative narratives to the words and tales of writers.
Mehlli Gobhai was himself the illustrator of books for children and won awards for books like Laxmi, the Water Buffalo Who Wouldn’t. His other books include The Blue Jackal, The Legend of the Orange Princess and Ramu and the Kite.
The award carries a cash prize of Rupees One Lakh, a statuette and a certificate. The winner will be announced by the 15th of July and the prize will be awarded at a function organised specially for that purpose on the 30th of September
A few rules to keep in mind :
- The book should have been published in the previous calendar year For example, if the award is to be given in 2022 the book should have been published between (1st January 2021 - 31 st December 2021.)
- The author must be a citizen of India.
- The book can be in English or any other Indian language provided an English translation is provided in the case of the latter.
- Books Illustrated by the previous winner will not be eligible as they will be one of the jury.
- Please include a covering letter nominating the book and affirming its publication date and the citizenship of its illustrator.
- Each publisher is permitted to enter a maximum of 3 books.
- Please send 3 copies of the book you choose to nominate by the 31st of May to the address given below :
